A Manifesto about what Design ought to be about.
There are many important aspects of design, but the most important is feeling and experience. Design is all about the feeling you experience when interacting with it. Design isn’t just within space, but also clothing and more, and this idea applies to all. We like a space because of the way it feels, we like an outfit because of the way it makes us feel. It’s all about feeling. We like a certain color blouse because it makes us feel beautiful, accepted, and confident. Same with space. We like certain spaces because they make us feel comfortable, relaxed, exciting, and so much more. This is what design should be about. Purely about the feeling it gives you. Do you feel calm and tranquil? Or do you feel clean and motivated?
After feeling, the next thing that design should be about is function. Design should work. Design should be convenient. Design should always have the goal to make a space better, and more productive. Design is a basis of human activity. What does a cabinet do with no doors? Although you might think that functionality is different than feeling, they do relate to one another. It’s simple. When something works well, is convenient, provides a better-quality experience, it gives a better feeling. They go hand in hand.
There are many things that design ought to be about, but there are also many things that design should not be about. Design should not be about status, should not be about class, should not be about what our society says is best. It should not be a group consensus. Design is an individual experience, all different from one another. Similar to fashion, shoes shouldn’t be bought because they are trending. That should not be the reason for the purchase. There should be more. There should be a genuine interest in the product.
With all this being said, as designers we should keep this law in act. We should make sure our clients are putting feelings before status or reputation. It shouldn’t be about luxury just for the sake of luxury. It is all about the experience, and designers are responsible for practicing this.
What is wrong with where we are in the world regarding design?
An aspect of design that our society has adopted over the years is choosing higher class products over functional products. Some may choose more expensive, high-class products to achieve the ‘look’ or proof of being wealthy, rather than truly appreciating the art and design of the product. This is not what design should be about. There should be appreciation of the art and design. We see this in many aspects of our society. Although some of the most functional products can be more expensive, some are not, but people still choose to purchase for the profile of wealth and financial comfortability. There should be no status, no status with design. Even designers search for a higher status, which is not what it’s about. Out of everyone, designers should be the very last to have that one primary goal of obtaining status. There should be no price tag or status goal to design, over feeling and function. We, as designers should design because we want lives to be better, not for our own selfish reputation.
Design is also, currently in our society, about mimicking designs in an easier and more affordable way. Although this is understandable, design should also not be about this. There shouldn’t be a primary goal to sell. The primary goal should be to create that positive feeling and product for others, and yourself as the designer. Take the cost and profit out of it. Design should strive to create a unique experience that is unfamiliar for a client. Again, design is not for a reputation. Without this new and improved experience, design is just a different product that doesn’t change any mood. This is the right way to be regarding design, and other avenues of life.
In the future where should we be in design?
As designers, we should be inventing and practicing new ways to enhance feeling and function of design. What can be developed to be a stronger product? How can we alter existing products? As designers, what can be done to promote the two purposes of design in the best way possible? The answer would be to take a step back and start over. Redo existing products, find iterations, test new ideas. We need to find stronger solutions and better arguments for existing designs. As designers, we should search for feedback from users to get true and firsthand experiences. We should host research. We, as designers, need to first-hand experience the experience that our designs provide. How do people act in, around or while experiencing designs? Do we know? We must take a deeper look on how designs can be brought to another level other than just feeling and function. We should search for another aspect of design that is necessary and appreciated by designers and by the ones interacting with a design.
As designers, we should be open to new ideas and concepts that question typical norms. We, as designers, should avoid stereotypical ideas and create new ones. We, as designers, should change the connotations towards certain designs. If a pattern design would now be considered ‘chaotic,’ let’s change that to ‘relaxing.’ Let’s define new concepts, new styles, and new ideas. We, as designers can completely redirect ideas and concepts in hopes to provide better, more efficient products, and feelings, for the wellbeing of our clients. We should focus on making feelings better and spaces more functional. That is our job to provide to our clients.
Overall, design should be about making life better. Whether ‘better ‘means easier and more convenient, or calmer and cozier. And the only answer to make life better is to feel better. I believe that if you feel good, then your life is good. How do you currently feel in this space? How could you feel better in this space? That’s when design comes into play. That’s why design in important, valued, and desired.
